24 February 2020

To the Owner/Occupier,

Update on Suburban Rail Loop

I am writing to update you on Suburban Rail Loop and how the project is progressing.

Suburban Rail Loop is a city and state-shaping infrastructure project that will transform Victoria’s public transport system and deliver significant urban renewal outcomes for Melbourne. It includes a new rail link, connecting Melbourne’s middle suburbs, and integrated precinct development associated with its new stations.

By connecting every major rail line from the Frankston line to the Werribee line, Suburban Rail Loop will establish a direct rail connection between Melbourne’s major employment, health, education and activity precincts outside Melbourne’s central business district.

A project overview fact sheet is included with this letter.

Progress to date

In September 2019, Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) was established to lead the planning and delivery of the project. Due to its size and scale, the project will be completed in stages over multiple decades.

Stage one of Suburban Rail Loop will deliver a rail tunnel connection in Melbourne’s south-east between Cheltenham and Box Hill.

The broad alignment and precinct locations have been confirmed for this first stage, which will include new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood, and Box Hill.

Planning and development work and stakeholder and community engagement focused on stage one is now underway.

Site investigations to gather further information about ground and environmental conditions are also happening at locations between Cheltenham and Box Hill. You may notice members of the Suburban Rail Loop project team conducting these investigations, including visual assessments, traffic and transport studies and geotechnical investigations, which will see around 100 boreholes drilled by mid-2020.

This work will ensure we have the most up-to-date and accurate information as planning for the detailed alignment and station location options in stage one continues.
Initial construction on stage one is expected to start in 2022, subject to required approvals.

Next steps

SRLA is committed to working with local communities between Cheltenham and Box Hill during the planning and development stage and through future project stages.

Over coming months, we will be engaging with your local community to provide more detailed information about the progress of stage one and to seek your views and ideas about this transformational project and the opportunities it can bring to your local area.

I encourage you to register for regular project updates and to provide your feedback on the project via the ‘Have Your Say’ online survey on our website at suburbanrailloop.vic.gov.au. You can also follow the Suburban Rail Loop Facebook page for regular updates as the project progresses.

Should you have any questions about the project please contact the Suburban Rail Loop information help line on 1800 105 105 or via the Contact page on our website.

We look forward to working with you and your neighbours as this significant public transport infrastructure project progresses.

Yours sincerely

Nick Foa
