Outstanding modern design and a focus on passengers are the hallmarks of the latest Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) station concepts.

New designs released for the underground station at Monash feature inviting public space surrounding the station entrance, leading to a light-filled concourse with platform screen doors for enhanced passenger safety.

The new station to be built as part of SRL East between Cheltenham and Box Hill will open by 2035, connecting more people to the largest employment and innovation hub outside Melbourne’s CBD. With SRL delivered, students, workers and visitors to the area will have a direct train connection for the first time.

The station will be located north of Monash University between Normanby and Ferntree Gully roads. A proposed southern entrance will provide access to Monash University and a northern entrance will connect through to the industrial and business precinct.

Along with an interchange for bus services and improvements to local roads, the new station will improve access to world-class education, health and research facilities, delivering important transport connections to the Monash National Employment and Innovation Cluster (NEIC).

SRL includes strategic land planning and development initiatives in SRL Precincts that will attract and support clusters of new businesses and deliver better local services and additional housing.

SRL will open up exciting prospects for new recreation spaces and community facilities, as well as improved walking and cycling links that will make Monash an even more attractive and vibrant place to study, work and visit. The station will feature plenty of bike parking and storage to support those cycling to and from the station.

SRL East will slash travel times and deliver huge benefits to Monash. Commuters will save an average of 40 minutes on a one-way trip from Monash to Cheltenham with SRL East, and up to 170 minutes on return journeys from Bundoora to Monash University with SRL East and SRL North.

Construction starts next year on SRL East — with 26 kilometres of twin tunnels and six new stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill — with trains running by 2035.
